Some Unusual Things I've Seen in Houses

Working in real estate has given me the opportunity to see a lot of homes over the years. While most are beautiful, unique, and full of personality, every now and then you walk into a house and think, "Well, that's something I've never seen before!"

From unusual decorating choices to downright head-scratching features, homes can be full of surprises.

Here are some of the weirdest things I've encountered—and trust me, I've only scratched the surface.

Bathrooms with Carpet

This one always surprises people.

Believe it or not, carpeted bathrooms were once a popular design trend. There's something a little unsettling about stepping out of the shower onto shag carpet.

While it may have seemed luxurious decades ago, it's definitely not a feature most buyers are looking for today.

Mystery Doors

One of the most exciting moments during a showing is discovering a door that seems to lead nowhere.

Sometimes it's a tiny storage space. Sometimes it's access to an attic. And occasionally it's a hidden room the homeowner forgot to mention.

Every mystery door feels like the start of an adventure movie.

Unusual Paint Choices

I've seen bright purple kitchens, neon green bedrooms, and ceilings painted black.

While paint is one of the easiest things to change, some color choices definitely make a memorable first impression.

The good news? Most buyers can look past paint and focus on the home's potential.

Indoor Hot Tubs

Nothing says "1980s luxury" quite like a giant hot tub in the middle of a living room.

At one point, indoor spas were the ultimate status symbol. Today, they usually leave buyers wondering how difficult they'll be to remove.

Taxidermy Collections

Walking into a home and being greeted by dozens of mounted animals can be a little startling if you're not expecting it.

Some homeowners proudly display hunting trophies throughout the house, creating a showing experience buyers won't soon forget.

Themed Rooms Gone Wild

A beach-themed guest room can be charming.

An entire pirate ship bedroom complete with a faux mast, treasure chests, and painted ocean walls? That's a commitment.

Themed rooms are fun, but they can sometimes make it difficult for buyers to envision the space as their own.

Backyard Surprises

Sometimes the weirdest things aren't inside the house at all.

I've seen backyard train tracks, miniature western towns, life-sized dinosaur statues, and even a moat.

One thing real estate has taught me is that homeowners can be incredibly creative.

Secret Storage Areas

Hidden bookshelves, concealed closets, and secret compartments always get people's attention.

While some are practical, others seem straight out of a mystery novel. They're often one of the most memorable features in a home.

The Lesson Behind the Weird

The funny thing is that what one person considers strange, another person absolutely loves.

A home reflects the people who live there, and those unique touches are often what make properties memorable. While unusual features may not appeal to every buyer, they certainly make for great stories.

One of the best parts of working in real estate is that no two homes are exactly alike. Every property has its own personality, history, and surprises waiting behind the front door.

So the next time you're touring homes, keep your eyes open. You never know when you'll stumble across a hidden room, a backyard dinosaur, or a hot tub in the living room.

And if you do, just remember—you've got a great story to tell afterward.

Love the Life. Find the Home That Fits It.

Not every memorable home has a dinosaur in the backyard or a secret room hidden behind a bookshelf—but every home has a story. Sometimes it's quirky, sometimes it's charming, and sometimes it's exactly what makes a property unforgettable.

Whether you're searching for a home with character, unique architecture, or simply a place that feels like you, there's a home waiting to be discovered.
